Over the coming weeks, Digital Leaders @ SJHS will be running regular Minecraft sessions in school, at the Genius Bar. During this time, we have planned activities which will allow students to work together collaboratively and develop their problem solving and creativity skills: all whilst having fun!
What is Minecraft?
Minecraft has become a gaming phenomenon! Originally released in 2011, the game has since become an award winning, global hit. As of 2015, over 70 million copies have been sold, making it the best-selling PC game ever! It allows users to create pretty much anything they can think of using blocks. It is open world and often has no specific goals for the playing to accomplish, allowing them to decide how they play the game. As Minecraft has grown over time, players have built entire countries, as well as incredibly detailed versions famous places or objects like Middle Earth, Hogwarts and the Titanic. You can check out some of the amazing creations here.
Genius Bar sessions
The sessions will run at break times on Mondays and is open to all year groups. During this time, students will be working in teams of 1-4, with peers from their year group, to complete in a Speed Building contest. Each week, Digital Leaders will choose a theme and students have to work together in collaboration to build the best creation possible within the 10 minute time limit. Once this is complete, a winner for the week will be chosen.
To find out what a Speed Building contest is, check out this video on YouTube.

- A team of students, all in the same year group (max. 4 per team)
